WOW!! 40 thousand armed men crossed over to the other side! That is a huge number!! Not counting the ordinary people!
vs 4-7: 'So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.'
A stone memorial was set up in the middle of the Jordan as a memorial to remind the people of the greatness of God and what he had done.
I admire Joshua, a leader who obeyed God's voice and I believe he remembered the words spoken to him by God at the start of this journey. Joshua 1: 8 'Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.'
Look what happened as a result of his obedience: vs 14-'That day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.'
A stone memorial was not only set in the middle of the river Jordan but also on the other side at Gilgal. Oh the importance of remembering the Lord both in our 'dry' times and victorious times!!
